IELTS for migration

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is mutually managed by the IDP Education, Australia, British Council, and Cambridge English Language Assessment. IELTS Test Format

In IELTS, there are four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Speaking and Listening modules are the same in IELTS Academic & IELTS General Training, but the Reading and Writing tests are different.

IELTS Writing (60 minutes)

The IELTS writing test requires you to complete two tasks and covers topics of general interest based on the module you are taking.

IELTS Academic

Task 1: Describing a graph, table, chart or diagram in their own words, at least 150 words.
Task 2: Writing a short essay on a certain topic of discussion, at least 250 words.

IELTS General Training

Task 1: Writing a letter, at least 150 words.
Task 2: Writing an essay on a topic of general interest, at least 250 words.

The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on an array of reading skills. You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, skimming, and figuring out the writers’ attitudes, opinions and intentions. 60 minutes for the test.

Three long passages from books or journals covering topics of interest at the graduate and post-graduate levels.

IELTS General Training, reading divided into three sections.
Section 1: Short Text dealing with an everyday topic.
Section 2: Two short texts related to work.

The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on an array of reading skills. You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, skimming, and figuring out the writers’ attitudes, opinions and intentions. 60 minutes for the test.

IELTS Academic

Three long passages from books or journals covering topics of interest at the graduate and post-graduate levels.

IELTS General Training, reading divided into three sections.
Section 1: Short Text dealing with an everyday topic.
Section 2: Two short texts related to work.
Section 3: One long text on any topic of general interest.

You will have to listen to four recordings and then answer the questions asked. The recordings are of native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes. An additional 10 minutes are given to you to transfer the answers to the answer sheet.

Face to Face interview including an introduction, speaking at length about a topic and discussions. The IELTS Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills. The test is recorded and conducted in three parts.

Part 1 lasts for 4-5 minutes (conversation between the candidate and the IELTS examiner in a social context).

Part 2 (cue card) lasts for 3-4 minutes, 1-minute preparation on a cue card, followed by 1-2 minute speech on the given cue card.

Part 3 lasts for 4-5 minutes. In part 3, a set of follow up questions is asked to part 2 by the examiner.
